Sarah Okungu is excited for her daughter who shall be competing at the Miss Kenya UK to be held in the Kassam Stadium at Oxford, UK. She sees this Pageant as one that will promote the beauty of Kenya. As a founder of Diaspora University Town in Kenya, Sarah would like to see a Pageant planned in Diaspora University Town in Kenya that brings together young women from all 47 counties of Kenya and from the Diaspora cities. Why are you excited about the Miss Kenya UK Pageant?
Am very excited since my own daughter, (British born) is taking part in the Miss Kenya UK Pageant. What a joy that she's embracing and identifying with the beauty of her mother country, Kenya
How many contestants will compete in the pageant?
There are 10 contestants. Ten young ladies whose origin is from Kenya will be competing.
How do young women benefit from participating in the beauty pageant?
The pageant gives them the opportunity to identify themselves with their mother country Kenya and the diverse beauty and culture in Kenya. It is also an opportunity for them to develop their confidence and life skills.
What role does food play in a beauty pageant?
Food is a key factor. The young beautiful contestants have to watch out for their diet, apart from maintaining their beautiful bodies. What they consume is important to their mental health and overall well-being. My daughter has been very disciplined on what she eats. She loves fish as a Luo and ugali (Maize meal), greens, sweet potatoes, and healthy salads, including avocados from Kenya.
How can young Kenyans in the UK play a role in advancing the beauty of Kenya?
The event provides a big platform for the young women to display the rich varieties of Kenyan culture. The pageant is an empowerment for the young women to showcase the beauty of Kenya through traditional wear that reveals our rich culture. The young women through this pageant and thereafter will have an opportunity to promote tourism to Kenya. During the pageant they will showcase their beauty clothed in Kenyan prints and diverse colours. When doing the event they will be advancing the beauty of Kenya.
Do you see a time where we have a beauty pageant that Kenyans from Kenya 47 Counties, U.K, U.S & other parts compete?
Oh yes. l am one of the founders of Diaspora University Town and would like to see a Pageant established in DUT that brings together young women from all 47 counties and from Diaspora to compete in a pageant.
