Dr. Gilbert Karimi, who holds a doctorate from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom (UK) is spearheading the establishment of the Diaspora University Department of Materials Design and Engineering as part of his relocation back to Kenya plan. He has started formulating and writting the plan to establish the department and offer degree programs.

The plan he is writing will incorporate academic courses that advance material making, improvement and recycling. One of Dr. Karimi’s goals through DUT and the Diaspora University department is to advance materials design and manufacturing in Kenya in a way that embodies technological advancements, environmental sustainability and plays a key role in securing the future of upcoming generations in a competitive and dynamic world.

The department of materials design and engineering plan he writes for implementation at Diaspora University will further establish partnerships with industries, academia, and interested private and public institutions. The department created will be part of the School of Engineering, which is planned to have about eight academic departments.

During his visit to Diaspora University Town he toured the site and studied some of the materials on the land. He was happy to see the building materials that the Ndara B community is already working to produce. The department will work closely with the community to establish the industrial area of about seven hundred acres and support the diverse products produced by the industries setting up. The academic department's goal is to teach and research on materials processing, structure, properties and performance.

Through its laboratories, the department will explore diverse materials design and engineering including: Metals, Alloys, Glass, Ceramics, Polymers, Plastics, Semiconductors, Nanomaterials and others.

The plan will also advance partnerships with other academic institutions, county and national government, industries, and other partners. These partnerships will ensure that students graduating with bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees offered by the department will have ready jobs, well-developed character and bright career prospects upon graduation.

For every Kenyan family to achieve good housing over 20 million formal jobs need to be created and 7 million housing units developed in the next 10 years (by 2035), as Kenya's population grows to 65 million. The DUT system and its developers will create as many jobs as possible and develop as many houses as possible. For example a developer who sells a DUT townhouse unit and achieves Ksh 1.3 million will have the opportunity to build more housing units and grow their wealth using the DUT job creation and housing development system.
